By UNITED PRESS CANADA A by-product of depression OTTAWA — Canada's inflation rate plunged to its lowest level in more than two years Friday, but opposition MPs said the reduction was merely the by-product of a depressed economy. Statisucs Canada said the inflation rate fell 0.5 percentage points TIast month to 9.3 per cent. December's drop capped seven straight months of declines and pushed the annual rise in the cost of living to its lowest level since March 1980. the | The announcement was welcomed by opposition critics, but they were quick to point out that the downward trend = was caused by economic Stagnation and not the federal government's restraint program. “It is because of the continuing weakness of economy,” NDP finance critic Nelson Rus said. “It has nothing to do with the 6 and 5 program. It has everything to do with the fact that this country is reaching depression conditions.” NDP claims ‘massive sellout’ OTTAWA — Canada has bowed to American pressure and was allowing foreign interests to ab- sorb domestic firms at the highest rate since it began screening foreign in- vestment in 1974, New Democrat Lome Nystrom said Friday. “I think it’s a massive sellout,” the Saskat- chewan MP told reporters. “They're buckling under pressure of the Reagan regime in the United States with their born-again capitalist approach. They're terrified by the Amenicans and there is a massive retreat.” Nystrom said __ tthe government has reneged on its promise to strengthen the Foreign Investment Review Agency, which” was created in 1974 to monitor investment in Canada by its interests abroad.
