Now’s a good time to start
a batch of “glox” from seed
or tubers. You can choose
from a terrific range of
colors -— scarlet, pink,
voilet, white and a new and
delicious blue. The same
colors are available in ready-
to-plant tubers you buy at
the nursery.

Botanically, it’s Sinningia,
the. gesnariad with the large,
cup-like flowers and velvety
leaves. Start’ plants indoors
in pots filled with rich soil —
a mix of equal parts of peat
moss, topsoil and sand with a
dash of cow manure added.
.A teaspoon of bone meal per
pot also helps keep colors
true and vibrant. Seed is
exceedingly fine and should
be pressed lightly into soil
with the bowl of a spoon or
fingers. Soon, soft greenish
fuzz will appear on _ the
surface, followed by a tuber

form. Keep pots moist and -

look. for two “true” leaves in
a couple of weeks. You're on
your way to gladsome
gloxinias.

The. plants az are related to
African voilets (and all other
gesnariads), but differ in
light requirements.
Gloxinias thrive in bright
light, but not direct sunlight.
They require more food and
water than St. Paulia, too.

Prepare

for
winter
color

Rest pots on trays ‘covered
with pebbles or sand and
keep these moist. Warm and
humid air is a must. One
grower reports fabulous
success by keeping her glox
in the laundry room where
the steamy air does wonders.

If you begin with store-
bought tubers, it takes four-
to five months for blooms;
seed grown plants flower in
about seven months. Either
way, they'll queen it in your
home, apd fill it with house-
plant! cliness year around.

A window box, . whether
do-it-yourself or constructed
to specifications can be a
greenhouse. It’s essentially a
box, inserted outside the
window frame, and slanted
to allow for rain runoff. It
can be built of glass or
plastic and wood strips and
covered with an unused

storm sash. The whole idea

is to create a growing place
(for food or greenery) using
the sun and a little man-

_made heat for the not so

sunny. times. Thus, a good
window location would be
close to shade trees for
filtered light.

Most plants thrive on an
even temperature f 55
degrees at night and 70 in the
day. Keep this in mind for
the environment of your
window greenhouse. Size is
determined by the size of the
window’s frame. If you're
handy, select a plan and buy
materials and build it your-
self. If it looms like a
massive project, check out
area carpenters or buy a
ready made greenhouse
window unit. These come in

wipe-clean floor for your
greenhouse and, if needed,
place a heating coil below it
