These photographs tell three stories: that of the subject matter itself, of the onlooker’s reactions, and of Weegee’s own emotions. . Pellig, an immigrant from Fastern Europe, grew up on New York’s teeming Lower East Side. After trying a variety of jobs to help support his family, he iurned to photography. In 1924 he became a dark- House room technician for a photo. news service, where he often. got to fill in as a news photo-* _grapher during nighttime* crises, PAUL HORN (MULTIMEDIA SHOW)| APPEARING IN ‘ BRACKENDALE _ ART GALLERY ‘SUN. He rented a room nearby which he wired to pick up police emergency signals and fire aiarms. Fellig, the first press photo- grapher permitted to have a police radio in his car, often arrived first at the scene of gangland slayings (Murder. Inc.), fires and other disasters as if he had predicted them. As a way to promote his uncanny ability to be where the action was about to happen, he took the name “Weepee” - phonetic spelling of the Ouija board, a device which is said to _ foretell future events. .. BIS - Sunday News, June 21, 1981 Weepgee’'s were not limited to New York’s underside. He also aimed his camera at High Society, often using infra- . red film and flash which revealed what the naked eye -could not see. The exhibition was organized by the iIn-. ternational Centre of Photo- graphy, New York, with a grant from the National Endowment for. the Arts, Washington, B.C. .
