The lady is a 90 pound vigilante

Kathleen D. Jones ts a 90-
pound vigilante.

The 25-year-old welfare
mother nightly cruises the
strects of her crumbling
Smith Hill neighborhood on
a used bicycle looking for
criminals, fires and other

threats to peace and
tranquility.
“People might think this is

a little weird,” she said. “But
I'm trying to make
something out of myself.”
Last week, Mrs. Jones
received a state citation for

from a burning house near
her apartment. One April
saw smoke and ran into the
flaming buildmg im _ her

Jones, who weighs just
over 90 pounds and stands 5
feet tall, says she'd love to be
a pobce officer but has
neither the education nor
physical qualifications.

Her bike, which = she
bought from a friend for $40,
is equipped with a battery-
powered flashing red hght
and siren, two rear-view
mirrors, a horn, a water
bottle and a first aid kit.

“A lot of times it’s quiet
when I go out,” she said.
“But you never know what
you're going to run into.”

On a recent nde between
the dilapidated brick
buildings of two housing
projects, a group of young
boys circled ber on thew
bikes. “It's a cop,” one
shouted. “Hey copper.”

Jones turned on her red
light, siren — and a smile.

“Y ou're going to run into a
couple of wise guys.” she
said. “You got to show them
you know bow to kid around
with them. That's part of
bemg an officer.

“I don't go out and play
Superman,” she said. “That's
a good way to get killed |

A month ago, she came
across a three-car accident
just as it happened. By the
tume police got there, she
was directing traffic.

Recently, she spotted a
speeding car in a department
store parking lot, had a
hunch. and chased it. The
dnver jumped out and fled.
The car turned out to have
been stolen from a= store
employee's girlfmend.

“Kathy sees a lot of things
we don't,” said Patrolman
Robert Hart. “Its good to
have an extra set of eyes
around. She's a very big help
to us Too bad there aren't
more people hke her ~

“It may take a long time,
