In addition, the Port Alberni man, Gordon Hall, aged 27, pleaded guilty to escaping lawful custody after he ran away from the arrresting officer. Crown counsel Bob Anderson told North Vancouver Provincial Court that the two were charged on July 30 after RCMP Con- stable Murphy observed a truck drive onto a lawn. At this point, Anderson said Fred Pement, aged 30, of 203 East 20th Street, and another person came and told Murphy not to charge Hall. Pement tried grab Hall's arm and take him away and at one point told the officer to get a stretcher because Hall was too drunk to walk. Anderson said Hall then ran away and Murphy was pulled to the ground by Pement when he tned to chase him. Later, Pement told police he didn't know why he tried to obstruct the pohce of- ficer. “This is a serious case of obstruction,” Judge J.K. Shaw told Pement and Hall. “Things did get out of hand.” Shaw fined Pement $400 for obstructing a_ police officer and he fined Hall $250 for obstruction and $150 for escaping from custody.
