Titians found to be forgeries

FRANKFURT, West
Germany (UPI) - Luck and
“an exemplary skill for exact
observation” led a West
German art histonan to
discover that works by Titian
in some of the world’s

greatest museums are
forgenes, a colleague said
Tuesday.

The discovery of 400-year-
old Titian forgenes in such
museums as the Louvre in
Paris and the Metropohtan
Museum in New York was
the work of Dr.
Dreyer.

Dreyer discovered pen and
pencil lines that joined bits
of the landscape obscured by
nativity figures shown in the
more famous woodcut,
Zemke said.

The German art magazine
Pantheon said Dreyer
believes the forgeries were
the work of a loth century
employee of a Venetian
pnntshop who had access to
the woodcuts used in making
Titian’s prints.
