Question: Our family has recently moved to the North Shore from another province and would like to know about local medical services, We need to find a family doc- tor, and with smail children, we wonder about emergency services available after hours. Answer: To locate a family doctor, you can go to the Admit- ting Department at Lions Gate Hospital (LGH) and request a current list of physicians accepting new patients. Or, you could call our office at 985-7138 and request the same in- formation. LGH is located at 231 East [Sth St., one block east of Lonsdale Avenue, in North Van- couver. Your family doctor will see you in his or her office during regular office hours, and most doctors have 2 physician on call on even- ings and weekends, should there be an emereency. If your problem requires prompt medical attention, you could go to the Emergency Department at LGH. Treatment in Emergency is given on a priority basis, dealing with the most crit- ically injured or seriously ill first. You will be seen by a physician who is on duty at that time. Patients are advised to call their doctors alter receiving treatment in Emergency for follow-up care. Anyone seen in Emergency who is identified at risk by going home because of living alone or lacking friend or family support, but who can be medically managed in their home environment, could be plac- ed on the Quick Response Pro- 20 - Sunday. A second option for urgent medical needs would be one of the clinics that operate on the North Shore. The Park and Tilford Medical Treatment Centre at 1003 - 333 Brooksbank (983-2442), and the Lynn Valley Medical Clinic, at 1200 Lynn Valley Rd. (988-5389), both in North Vancouver, are staffed by doctors 365 days of the year who will see patients on a drop-in basis. The Ambleside After Hours Medical Clinic at 520 - 17th St. in West Vancouver is pen for limited evening and weekend hours. The times of operation vary greatly between the clinics. The clinics are not meant to replace the ongoing care of a fam- ily physician, but to supplement their services and those of the hospital. The clinics cannot provide casts or x-rays, but are equipped to give stitches. To apply for the B.C. Medical Plan as a new resident from another province, call 688-8358.
