Place. The Wendy’s Classic Challenge will mark only the 15th time in their careers that Borg and McEnroe have played each other and the record stands at a tie with seven wins and seven losses each. These two. gifted players have always had superbly contested matches. The most famous being the 1980 Wimbledon final which produced the stunning 34 point tie-breaker which McEnroe won to push the match to an equally exciting fifth set which Borg eventual- ly won 8-6 giving him his fifth consecutive Wimbledon title. Veteran tenmis watchers say it was Wimbledon’s finest match ever. ' AVENGED McEnroe avenged that loss two months later at the U.S. Open where he won his se- cond consecutive Open title beating Borg in another masterful five setter. Although Bjorn Borg has not been competing on the main circuit this past year, he has certainly not been idle. Last fall in New Zealand, he beat ’83 Wimbledon finalist, Chris Lewis, in straight sets in three matches played throughout the country. Borg’s list of utles seems almost endless. He has won 60 Grand Prix tournaments, many of them more than once. Since that time he hasn't often been out of the limelight with his volatile temperament making as many headlines as his superb tennis abilities. At the age of 25, McEnroe has won three consecutive U.S. Open titles, two Wimbledon crowns (is the current champion) and in January won his second Masters championship to make him the 1983 number one player in the world.
