IT'S International Walk to School
Day.

And although vou should be thinking about
traffic safety every day, today is a special
reminder that both drivers and pedestrians need
to take ware out there:

ICBC, along with a coalition of North Shore
Community Partners, is sponsoring Safety On
Our Streets on the North Shore. The program
is aimed at parents and the 15,000 students
between the ages of five and 12 vears old that
attend elementary schoo! on ihe North Shore.

In anticipation of the day, [CBC and its
Partners created pedestrian awareness informa-
tion packages which were sent home to parents
for discussion.

“These information packages given to
North Shore elementary students are meant to
educate both students ‘and Parents on the
importance of pedestrian _ safety. This
Community Partners effort is an example of our
concern for the safety. of our children on the

ICBC, along with North Vancouver City,
the Districts of North Vancouver and West
Vancouver Were so concerned about pedestrian
safety on the North Shore that for the first time
in the history of the North Shore, all respective
municipalities collectively proclaimed
September as Pedestrian Safety Month.

In the last five vears, 11] pedestrians have
been killed and close to 610 people were
injured in pedestrian-related incidents on the
North Shore. Forty-four per cent cf the pedes-
tians injured were youth aged 25 years and
younger.

Today, Braemar elementary school took part
in the International Walk to School Day event
along with B.C. Lions players, North
Vancouver District Mayor, Don Bell and respec-
tive councillors — who were on hand to walk
with parents and children to Braemar ¢lemen-
tary, starting at 8:30 a.m.
