Squamish members decided on Sunday to accept $92.5 mil- lion dollars tram the federal government as compensation for reserve lands on the North Shore, in Squamish and in Kitsilano that the band was forced from early in the 20th Cenrury. A clear majority — 1,12) of 1,325 votes cast in the reteren- dum — elected to accept the money and the settlement agree- ment that accompanies it. ‘There were 1,940 members eligible to cast a vote. The agreement allows 2 distribution to all members of up to 20% of the $92.5 million. The rest of the money is to go into a trust and can be used for education, social programs, purchasing or repairing houses, enhancing Squamish Nation culture and language, generating businesses and economic activities, and more. ‘The agreement also requires that the Squamish Nation absolutely surrender to Canada ali of its rights and interests in the lands it is being com ensated for. “By accepting the the federal settlement, the Squamish Nation has resolved a difficult and longstanding issue,” Chief Gibby Jacob said in a press release Monday.
