brake system of 34,000 Contours and Mystiques.

ing the vehicle’s power steer-
ing as well as its water pump,
alternator and air condition-
ing. Steering effort will be
increased, which may increase
the risk of'a crash. .

twisting.

The remaining cars are
1995 Oldsmobile Auroras and
Buick Rivieras. Rear shoulder-
belts may not retract because
of a problem involving a
retainer and the retractor
return spring. Excessive slack
in the belt may result in more
severe injuries to an occupant
in a crash.

A problem with cracking
fuel tanks has prompted
Hyundai to recall an estimated
12,600 1996-97 Tiburons.

According to Transport
Canada, stress cracks may
develop on the upper tank sus-
face, allowing vapours or fuel
to escape. : :

Hyundai_ dealers will
replace the fuel cap with one

_that is vented to reduce fuel

tank vacuum. Tanks will be
inspected for cracking - -and

replaced if necessary.

Yamaha will soon issue
recall notices to the owners of
4,500 motorcycles because of:
problems with the brakes and a
side-stand that doesn’t want to
stay in position.

The motorcycles with the
sidestand problem are the
1998 YZFIORK, YZFRIL and
YZFR6M. Engine heat and
vibration can cause screws
holding the side-stand switch
to loosen and fail out, allowing
the motorcycle to be driven
while the stand is still down. If
the stand contaccs the ground,
the bike operator could lose
control.

Yamaha dealers have been
advised to replace the screws
with a combination of bolts
and nuts that will hold the
switch securely.

recalled because of possible
brake problems.

Transport Canada says
front brake pad material could
separate from the backing
plate because of insufficient
adhesion. This will reduce
braking ability, which could

- lead to a crash. Dealers will

install improved brake pads.
