Vancouver's Karina Bodo and 86 other students from throughout the province, WV girl attends B.C. Youth Parliament teams, SIXTEEN-YEAR- OLD Lisa Maberley of West Vancouver participated in the 60th session of the B.C. Youth Parlia- ment held in Victoria from Dec. 27 to 31. Interested in a possible future career in politics, the Grade #1 Crofton House student enjoyed meeting with young people from around the province to discuss top- ical issues in a parliamentary forum. “*! enjoy speaking on my feet,” said Maberley,. who enjoys drama, debating and public speaking. She came third in her category in a recent public speaking contest in Montreal. As this was her first year, Maberiey. was an eager backben- cher in the youth parliament. The roles of premier, deputy premier, leader of the opposition and the cabinet ministers were taken by students who were return- ing to the parliament. They can at- tend until they are 2! vears old. Some of the legislation they debated dealt with Youth Parlia- ment programs, including the ad- ministration . of regional youth parliaments " around B.C., in- volvement in the one-week summer camp for underprivileged children, education workshops and the par- ticipation of the members in the National Youth Parliament and Western Canada Youth Parlia- ment. The actual MLAs throughout the province will be informed of their younger counterparts’ deci- sions on various issues. The B.C. Youth Parliament was founded in 1923 under the name of the Older. Boys’ Parliament of B.C. The first premier was Walter S. Owen, who went on to become the Lieutenant Governor of B.C. in the early 1970s. There have been many changes since then particularly the admis- sion of female members in 1974, Maberley is an honor roll stu- dent, interested in languages, sciences and politics. She also likes sports and is an avid skier and tennis and badminton player. The motto of the youth parlia- ment is, ‘youth serving youth.’ Maberley has made a year-long commitment to her community.
