Bird drops in 1on WV council Catherine Barr Contributing Writer ” WEST Vancouver District Council just had to wing it last week. It wasn’t on the agenda, but during council's regular Monday meeting, a small swallow swooped its way into municipal hall through an open outside door. . _ The petrified creature cir- cled frantically over the heads of the mayor and council as they attempred to continue the meeting as usual. But in an effort to escape, and much to everyone's hor- ror, the little bird contiaual- ly beat itself against the nat- ural light ceiling domes. This led to a suggestion to shut off the lights and direct the bird back down the hall and safely outside. The lights were switched off, leaving council com- pletely in the dark, this cime : literally. Untortunately, the litle bird was still attracted to the outside — light shining through the domes. As the lights came back on, council again atrempred to ‘carry on with business at hand. The effort proved to be difficult with ali the distract- ing. flapping,- ducking and dodging that was going on. The. bird was still there too. SOPROVICH... suggest- ed standing outside and whistling a happy tune. Eventually the swaliow flew down a hallway leading to the main reception area. And because it takes at least a small committee to deal with most municipal matters, the bird was closely followed by the manager, the director of planning and the assistant director of opera- tions, With the main double doors opened wide, and the lights off, the intrepid trio grabbed boxes, waved papers and climbed desks trying to help the bird find its way outside. Coun. Bill Soprovich saved the dav, when he sug- gested they stand outside and whistie a happy tune. His cheep trick worked like a charm and the little bird flew safely outside.
