IT HAPPENS twice every
year and it strikes fear into
the hearts of most high
school students. It can’t be
avoided and it can sneak wp
on you when you least expect
it.

Stress, anxiety and fear are
common emotions that arise when
it looms.

It, of course, is exams.
Everyone knows at the beginning
of the semester they will be expect-
ed to take exams, but that doesn’t
mean they won't be caught off
guard. Anysite whe has been
through high schooi knows that

students can get extremely stressed
out.

Along with studying for exams,
students stil have to do regular
class work. Many students find this
difficult to handle.

Grade [1 student Cuitlin Day
says, “Teachers tell all of the stu-
dents to study hard for exams. How

can we study when we have five
pages of homework to do every
night? We always run out of time
near the end of the semester, so we
have to do more work to make up
for the time loss."

Linda Bodi, also a Grade [1 stu-
dent, exclaims, “I can’t stand it
when teachers pile work up until
the last day, because I don’t get as
much time to study!"

When exam week is upon stu-
dents, it is not hard to spot some-
one who is suffering the symptoms
of exam anxiety.

“I get butterflies in my stomach
a couple of days before I have an
exam,” says Bodi. “I can't help but
worry.”

However, there are a few stu-
dents who seem to keep their
heads.

Pam Asibury, a Grade 12 stu-
dent at Carson Graham, says,
“Preparation is the key to success.
You also have to know how to bud-
get your time really well so you
can get things done.”

No matter how much a student
tries to prepare for an exam, they
can't get away from the frenzy that
happens beforehand. Students
should try and keep calm, but hav-
ing experience in this area myself,
keeping calm is a very hard thing
to do.
