10 — Sunday, September 25, 1994 - North Shore News Brown INQUIRING REPORTER THE CONSERVATION office reports that the number of recorded bear sightings on the North Shore has more than tripled so far this year. If you come face to face with a bear you should neither run, climb a tree, nor drop to the ground and play dead. What you should do is make yourself look as large as possible — hold your coat or jacket open, stand together if there’s more than one person, and don’t bend down — and back away calmly. Once you get a safe distance away, yell and clap hands. Do not minimize the possible danger. Never approach a bear and never try te retrieve something once a bear has it. Of course, the best thing to do is to avoid getting into a face-to-face confrontation in the first place. Make your presence known when hiking on local mountains by wearing a bear bell. And don’t encourage bears to your neighborhood by putting your garbage out the night before it’s collected — put it out in the morning. And finally, if you see a bear, report it to the conservation office at 1-800-663-9453. Would you know what to do if you came face to face with a bear?
