We have enthusiastically agreed with the views expressed; we have expressed ontrage at the thought that this scribbler is actually paid to rant and rave; and we have been challenged by views that perhaps we had not considered before. The columnist’s job is traditionally one of in- terpreting — rather than investigating — events and logics, be they past or present. Judging by the amount of columnist-generated mail the News receives cach week, it would seem a column’s ability to spark intcilec- tual debate has not diminished.
