music FU 3 OMEN HAVE long claimed her their own — the raw- voiced empowering sur- vivor, the sharply introspec- tive poet, the tough and brittle one with a definite vi- sion of how things will be. With major label support from Chameleon and ASM Records for her new release, a subtle stunner called Phantom Center, it’s time for Ferron to be embraced by a larger audience. While the first show this coming Sunday at the Playhouse Theatre has been sold out for some time, a second show starting at 4 p.m. has been added. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. Music Now recently caught up with Ferron. Music Now: What took you away from B.C. and down to the States? Ferron: ‘Il won a green card and to honor it you have to live in the States. When | opened up the map it just seemed like why would | live in a big city when I just came from Vancouver and the Gulf Islands. | decided that it would be interesting to go the opposite, not sea level but 7,00C feet. It was beautiful. | wrote Sunken City and Inside Track in Santa Fe. | think that some of the gentleness on the Phantom Center album fed from being in Santa Fe — its soft colors, a soft city. How do you feel about that aspect of your career? Ferron: ‘I don’t know how that worked. The world is bigger and smatier at the same time. If there is only one category, Vl take that ane but it’s humanism to me, Music Now: ‘‘How do you respond to critics who compare you to a young Bob Dylan? Ferron: ‘Well, how young? It’s like I think it’s taken so long for women to have 50 per cent of the airwaves. [ think it’s that they just don’t have any other women to compare me to. They might want to compare me to Joni Mitchell, but she has a higher voice. It’s just a way to tel! the audience that this is a kind of poetry. It’s not only a song on the radio. It’s a certain style that we're trying to call back. I'm also compared to Van Mor- rison and some Springsteen stuff.
