MAILBox Judge’s actions ‘disgust’ Dear Editor: Like many of your readers, especially those of us who know Jan, Eugene and Nick Kiss, | am filled with a sense of anger and disgust at the actions of Judge Kenneth Scherling in the matter of the penalties to be paid by James William Bergen who was responsi- ble for the death of Anthony Kiss last Feb. 18. Tam even more disgusted when I read on page five of the penalties received by John Raumann (a 50- year driving suspension for driving without due care and attention) and by Stephen Douglas Shea (12 months in jail for two counis of break, enter and theft). It is acknowledged that there could always be more to a situa- tion than can be concluded from a brief news item, and therefore | feel you would be doing your readers a service if you were to give us more information about the three accused who were invalv- Helpers got meals through Dear Editor: The snow storm of Feb. 7 made it impossible for many of our vol- unteers to attend to Meals on Wheels, Service was cancelled in Deep Cove and Horseshoe Bay because of road closures, but there were 65 meals delivered in other areas of the North Shore. This was possible through the wonderful cooperation and gener- osity of the following: e The City of North Vancouver firemen and District of West Van- couver firemen who transferred our bulk food from the caterer to the serving depots in North and West Vancouver. ¢ Automobile dealers who supplied vehicles and drivers to assist with the delivery of meals, including Specialty Motor Cars, 1234 Marine Dr., North Vancouver; Pacific Honda, 72§ Marine Dr., North Vancouver; Dick Irwin Chevrolet Oldsmobile Ltd., 845 Marine Dr., North Vancouver. Norma Bean, coordinator Meals on Wheels NV District snow removal defended Dear Editor: With reference to the letters in the Feb, 25 North Shore News, I felt I just had to write in defence of the North Vancouver District and the snow clearing. We choose to live on the hilly North Shore, so why can’t some people just accept that for a few days each year the roads are not going to be kept completely clear to all traffic? We live on East 29th Street and the district plows were always there. Buses most of the time were in operation on our route. Mother Nature did us a good turn. There were fewer cars on the road and more people used public transport. Obviously, by the sound of it, your readers are not conserva- tionists. Will we ever get the message? D. Due to space constraints we cannot publish all the letters we receive. Published letters may be edited for brevity, clarity, accura- cy, legality or taste, ed: did any of them have any previous convictions, were they all of good character, did they come from, as the courts sometimes like to say, ‘‘good families'* or are they victims of any of the ills and ine- quities that plague our society, and should that be taken into con- sideration when sentence is passed? [f we don’t know more of the facts surrounding each of these cases, then we might somehow come to one of two cciuciusions: either a life really is not worth as much as some stolen property or else the so-called justice system in this province is in reality just a myth, or if it does exist, it does so for only a select and favored few. At feast there is one redeeming feature in this entire sorry episode, and that is that the sentence ap- parently is being appealed, and well it should be. Hopefully, a sentence more appropriate will be handed down, and then we will all have a bit more confidence in the justice system. Those of us who had the privi- lege of knowing Anthony know that he came from a good family, too.
