40 ~- Friday, October 28, 1988 - North Shore News Be easy on your engine WINTER IS a time of year that can take a real toll on your car’s engine. As temperatures begin to drop, you should be aware of the follow- ing engine maintenance tips from lubricant engineers. » Let your car warm up before you begin to drive. Cold oil takes much longer to reach the critical parts of an engine than warm oil. By allowing oil to flow before driving, you can reduce engine wear drastically. ® Never race a cold engine. About 80 per cent of all engine wear occurs during start-up and before the oil is fully warmed. Racing a cold engine causes abrasive unfiltered oil to damage engine components. Even worse, metal to metal contact can occur to parts that aren’t being properly lubricated. ® Select the proper viscosity grade of motor oil for winter use. You can choose either a single or multi-grade oil. Multi-grade oils meet the requirements of more than one SAE viscosity grade classification, and provide much better low temperature lubrication. Therefore, multi-grade is suitable for use over a wider range of temperatures than single grade oil. ®Use a top quality oil and change it as designated in your owner’s manual. Remember, if you subject your car to severe usage as described in the manual, more frequent oif changes are nec- essary. By using oil that meets API classifications for performance you will be getting the best protection against rust, wear, corrosion and sludge that damage an engine’s parts. © Check your oil level often. It is estimated that 20 per cent of all engines checked are one or more quarts low on oil. If you wait for the red engine light to come on, you may have damaged your engine already. Check cooling system WITH FALL upon us, now is the time to prepare your car’s cooling system for the freezing temperatures ahead. The following tips will help pro- vide a good start to trouble-free winter driving. ® Check Antifreeze/Coolant Level — In cooling systems with antifreeze/coolant recovery reser- voirs, the radiator should be full of antifreeze. Cars without recovery reservoirs should have an an- tifreeze level about one inch below the filler neck when the engine is cold. © Flush Out Harmful Corrosion — Even if your coolant is pro- viding ample antifreeze and anti- boil protection, its rust inhibitor package may have lost its effec- tiveness. As a rule, the entire cool- ing system should be flushed and refilled with antifreeze each year to maintain optimum efficiency. Preventive maintenance is the key to prolonging the life of your car. By following these simple tips, motorists can help ensure cooling system longevity and performance. aoe het Ra REINS ane ae ec ratze witha great price on our best muffler.
