1 am truly sorry that Mr. Weiz
feels that Shaw Cable doesn't
listen to the wishes of its
subscribers and that we are unfair-
ly raising our rates and forcing
new channels on him. Let me try
to shed some light on the subject.

In any business there are things
that are within our control and
others outside of our control.
Listening to the views of our
subscribers js within our control
and we have genuinely tried to do

CRTC specified that the youth,
weather and religious channels had
to be delivered to all subscribers
(with all subscribers sharing the
cost) or not at all. Based on our
continued desire to bring our
subscribers the widest possible
choice in programming and our
previous publicly stated commit-
ment, we chose to add the new
channels.

When some of our staff and 1
recently attended a promotion on
the new channels, we came away
feeling that there was going to be

CRTC changed the licensing of the
Sports Network and MuchMusic to
allow cable companies to include
them as part of their basic service
for an increase of approximately
$i/month to everyone or leave
them as an optional pay service.
We asked for our customers’ views
by placing ballots in the newspa-
per, mailing ballots to over 10 per
cent of our subscribers, and pro-
viding a one hour call-in talk show
on ‘Cable 4’, our community
channel. The majority wish was to
leave them optional. This we did.
