JVLAIL BOX BADEN-POWELL Trail Dear Editor: Residents of the North Shore are justly proud of the Baden-Powell Centennial Trail which, from its opening in 1971, has snaked its way from Horseshoe Bay on Howe Sound to Deep Cove on Indian Arm. it may, therefore, come as a shock for them to learn that sec- tions of it are in trouble, partiy from disrepair, paztly from = en- croachment by the inexorable nor- thward march of housing. To illustrate: Parking at the Horseshoe Bay end is virtually non-existent, the one-time parking lot having been taken over by a highways maintenance yard. The Hollyburn Ridge section south from Cypress Bowl, though still open, carries the dissuasive sign indicating that the trail is in poor condition and that hikers use it at their own risk. In North Vancouver, the bridges along the Grouse Mountain stretch ‘in troubl are in poor repair and the crossing of Abeland Canyon has vanished altogether. [It is, however, on the next stretch from Mountain Highway eastward that the greatest threats exist. Between that point and Pipeline Road in’ Lynn Creek valley, houses are already visible while the walk along the road south to Dempsey is a nightmare. Not only is it narrow and twisting, it carries all the traffic for the new Lynn Headwaters Park. Leaving aside the Lynn Canyon park section with its deteriorating boardwalk, the stretch east of the Seymour River is in the process of being pre-empted by houses even now. A great part of the trouble comes from divided authority. The Scouts, the trail’s original builders, have given up responsibility for its upkeep and that duty lies in the hands of the local authorities through which the trail passes: the Give Yourself a Second Chance The Adult Basic Education Program is an alternative route for adults who did not finish grade 12, who want to upgrade their education before entering college or university, or who want to improve their job prospects. Students generally work at their own pace and fit classes into their work schedules.
