ALFRED BAYNE HONORED Seniors centre unveils plaque A MEMORIAL plaque was recently placed and dedicated at the West Vancouver Seniors memorate the contribution of the Recreation Centre to com- late Dr. Alfred Bayne to thar award-winning institution. The plaque was unveiled by Mayor Don Lanskail at a June 22 ‘ceremony, with a dedication by the Rev. Bill Cramm, formerly of the West Vancouver Baptist Church. Dr. Bayne's vision and deter- mination were driving factors in the establishment of the seniors recreation centre. It was he, with fellow members of the Silver Bay Society, who worked to persuade the three levels of government that the rapidly growing seniors popu- lation deserved their own, separate recreation facility. rather than an addition to the: West Vancouver Recreation Centre. Retired to West Vancouver after working as a dentist throughout the province, Bayne became con- cerned with the increasing number of lonely, inactive retired people in his new community. Bayne and his wife Violet, who also attended the commemorating ceremony, travelled throughout America and Britain, frequently visiting seniors’ drop-in centres and activity centres to acquire in- formation. . With Bayne's ieadership, Allan Johns and the other members of the Silver Bay Soviety operated a drop-in centre and managed to raise several thousands of dollars towards the preposed meeting place. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Weiter As a result, West Vancouver District Council appointed a fact- finding committee and a planning committee with plenty of repre- sentation from seniors. When the cherished objective was finally reached with the 1981 opening of the deluxe West Van- couver Seniors Centre, the Silver Bay Society disbanded, with the exception of its Special Services for Seniors group, which has con- tinued and expanded. Nearly ail of the members of the old Silver Bay Society joined the new centre and continued their ac- tive participation in their chosen interests. Bayne, at one time, was faced with skeptics who wondered whether he could round up a cou- ple of hundred seniors to use the proposed centre. Today, there is a membership of more than 2,600 people, and the seniors centre is an award-winning success. An active participant in all of the communities he worked in throughout his life, Dr. Bayne passed away in 1983. The new plaque is located in the centre’s rose garden.
