Think safety when
launching the boat

LAUNCHING A boat is-a rela--

tively.simple part of boating.

Even before backing the trailer

down the ramp, a few common
. sense rules should be followed, say
many boating experts.

While in the lot and out of the
way, stow all gear. All rods,
tackle, coolers, bait, water skis,
clothing, life jackets, etc., should
be transferred into the boat before
backing down. ;

Make sure the drain plug is in
{then check it again); tilt the motor
up and unplug the trailer lights.
Then, checkout the launching
ramp. .

Make sure that the ramp extends
smecothly into deeper water; look
for obstacles, holes or a sharp
drop-off which might “catch” the
trailer wheels.

When ready to proceed, pull i in-
to position and, using your part-
ner’s guidance and rearview mir-

rors, back carefully « toward the

ramp.

Remember, when backing, that
the stern of the boat will.move in. .
whenever possible. ; oe

vehicle’s steering wheel. If the
wheels turn right, the stern will go
left.

If driving a boat off the trailer,
your partner should climb aboard

‘while the rig is stopped on the

ramp. Remove the - ‘‘transom
saver” if the rig is outfitted with
one (this device is a rod attached to
the boat which supports the out-
board motor in a tilted position
during highway travel). :

The safety straps.and bow line
should be disconnected, and. the
trailer should be eased into“ the
water until the boat floats. Trim
the enginc down before starting.

The operator should slowly back

off the trailer.

If launching a smaller boat, at-
tach a bow line and, when deep
enough, push the boat off the
trailer and guide it ashore or to the
dock with the line.

Move. as quickly as possible
while on the ramp. Once launched,
move away from the ramp areas so
