J Celebrity gives LOCAL CELEBRITY chef, cookbook author and co-owner of the Pierre Dubrulle Culinary School, Pierre Dubrulle will be giving four. cooking shows at Lonsdale Quay Market this weekend. Pierre Dubrulle has been a chef for 25 years. In 1971 he left his native France to settle in Van- couver; after cooking in several local restaurants and holding occa- sional small cooking classes, he joined with businesswoman and West Vancouver resident Diana Becker to start the Pierre Dubrulle Culinary School. The school opened in 1983 with seven students and offers students a blend of lectures, demonstra- tions, hands-on practice together with the likelihood of a position in many of Vancouver’s professional kitchens. The school now accepts ’ 24 students per class for 24 weeks. The school offers a night pro- gram for non-professionals, held in a new demonstration kitchen. Participants learn various cooking skills from local chefs and Dubrulle’s own staff. Dubrulle has also found time to write his own cookbook The Great Canadian Chef from France, and this book will be on sale at the cooking shows. The book was edited by North Shore News reporter Michael Becker. Dubrulle will be pleased to * autograph all copies. Shows take place at 11:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and 15. Club president Wally Oatway said the 34-year-old North Shore Club is trying to boost its member- ship from the present 30 couples up to about 40 to 45 couples. With a three-piece orchestra called Three Wheel Drive, the club members dance to music of Glen Miller and other swing era favorites usually once a month. “t's like a dance hall with ballroom-type of dancing. It’s (mostly) people who have grown up in the big band era,” said Oat- way, a 20-year club member. Some of the Mr. and Mrs. Dance Club members come from Burnaby, Vancouver and Rich- mond to enjoy the evening of sw- ing music from a bygone era, he explained. Oatway is looking for couples who ‘‘like a good time’ and are in the 40 to 55-year-old category. “But we don’t want it to get too big," he cautioned.
