which this theory would

the cross-linking of
molecules as a causative fac-
tor in aging.

. But Dr. Rose feels the
supporters of the
physiological approach have
failed to prove anything
scientifically.

“There is good reason
why the physiological ap-
proach has failed ... it’s
wrong,” he says. The real

cause of aging is not some-"
thing built into our body:

mechanisms; it is evolu-
tionary, he believes.

The acid test of any theory
of aging is not whether
scientists can make an or-
ganism die sooner, but
whether they can make it live
longer he adds. He feels his

For many species, evolu-
tionary survival is a matter
ofthe ability to reproduce
prolifically. So natural
pressure on such species
would favor the selection of
individuals who reproduced
early and well, even at the
expense of ill-health and
rapid aging in later life.
