It was once a r quie~dazzie, Anglo- jenied newspaper. But peland Honderich changed civil yants all that. He turned it into an all-things-to-all-men thing that’s run by a trembling committee. Locally, we have the Morning Wimp and the Vancouver Moon, and you don’t need me to tell you about them. Stanley Burke is convinced they are run by little nests of Reds. 1 prefer to think their staffers are all in training for the pulpit. With the exception of Les Bewley, their writers emit only pious platitudes or ‘damn the government" garbage. Things are no better on the magazine front (and we won't even discuss televi- sion). Maclean's Magazine is now an abject copy of Time Magazine, but without Time's resources. Barbara Amiel is a shining light, but she appears only once a month. Maclean's is so gutless it wouldn't even ac- cept an interesting ad from the Pro-Life people. No one must be offended. Maciean’s is the CBC in print. But courage, mes enfants. Relief appears in the form of @ magazine edited by Peter Worthington, one of this country’ bravest souls. The magazine is called In- fluence. It has, apparently, existed toug for some time as a give- away, but [I hadn’: heard of it until Worthington asked me {to write one of: my mutinous pieces for it.: My own one-occasion invalve- ment apart, though, be assured that Influence (which you must now’ pay for if you want it) is worth reading. It fills the media gap. It is not mamby-pamby. It is of the right-ish bent. It has plenty to say. In his first column: as editor, Worthington deals with what the media are do- ing in today’s Canada, and comments, inter alia: “How often do the media point out that of the 180 or so states in the world, only 18 have maximum civil liber- ties and political rights — and not one of these is a so- cialist state? On the other hand, of the 14 ‘‘least’’ free, or most oppressive, regimes, all call themselves socialist. That’s got to tell you some- thing, but barely a comment from the media.’” Instead of reflecting reali- ty, he says, the media try to change reality. They present t a world colored by their own prejudices, and in doing so create a new .aythology that becomes conventional wisdom. Thus: “Black majority rule is invariably presented as the goal in discussions of South Africa — which preoccupies our media more than, say, repressive regimes elsewhere. “The reality is that there is NO black ‘majority’ rule on the continent of Africa — just an abundance of black ‘minority’ rule.
