B2 - Wednesday, August 15, 1984 - North Shore News Swimmers ready to tackle bay Sunday MORE THAN 35 swimmers will hit the chilly waters off West Vancouver at 9 a.m. Sunday for the second annual Bay Swim. Entrants will race from Pilot Cove at Caufeild Park in West Van to Spanish Banks West Beach Park in Vancouver, a distance of seven kilometres, in 14- degree Celsuis water. The first swim, held last year, attracted nine swim- mers with only five of them finishing. The swim has been orga- nized as both a test of en- durance and to help raise funds for the B.C. Special Olympics organization. So far this year, over $20,000 has been raised. The Bay Swim parallels a 1931 special event that saw 33 swimmers cross - ffom Lighthouse Park to Kitsilano Beach for ceremonies mark- ing the opening of the news Kits Pool. Well-known swimmer Percy Norman of Vancouver won that event. The Vancouver Interna- tional Bay Swim Society, or- ganizers of the Sunday’s event, are welcoming spec- tators to the start and finish line — and they’re appeall- ing for help from boaters. The society is looking for a number of small, stable motorized boats —~- in- flatables are best the society says — and owners to act as escort boats for the swim- mers. A lifeguard would be aboard each craft. If you can help, contact the society at 736-9683 or 946-8292 for information.
