August 5, 1984 voice to be a dog. trainer. You have to understand dog psychology, and human psychology as well, says Denise Holowolenko, a trainer for North Shore Neighborhood House and North Shore Night School. “I’ve read every book,” BARRETT FISHER Holowolenko says, .‘‘but there’s, no substitution for experience. You have to be around dogs a lot. “To manage a group of dogs, you’re dealing with 20 personalities instead of just one, and you're dealing with 20 people. It’s a psychological chore. She says a dog will challenge his status in the hierarchy. ‘‘It’s a dog's nature to test authori- ty.’’ . Holowolenko went on to explain that a dog might respect the father in a household, because he has a stern voice and demands respect, but that it might ‘walk all over’ the children. But he cays the dog must realize in the hierarchy of things, the children have more status than it does. **Dogs are most comfortable when they know their boundaries.”’ Behavior problems can stem from a number of causes, Holowolenko = ex- plained. She says there is a lot of stress involved with ci- ty living, verses the days when dogs could roam the farm. ‘‘Dogs are sensitive animals. They become stressed if there are problems in the household. Or if the family moves, it is stressful, because dogs are territorial. People have to be educated to have a dog in the city."’ SECTION FASHION « FOOD TRAVEL Other behavior problems can stem from a puppy being taken from the litter too soon or not soon enough, Holowolenko explained. Seven to eight weeks is the normal time a dog can leave its mother, but if taken too soon, the dog can be in- secure and fearful, and always cling to its master, afraid of other dogs and people. If taken too late, on the other hand, the dog is usually more adapted to dogs, rather than people. At the classes Holowolenko teaches, she says she is there to help dog owners learn to train their animals, not to train them herself. Though simple enough in theory, one of the most important aspects of training a dog is using the voice effectively. °‘Most people don’t modulate their voice properly,’’ she says. ‘The correct voice tone is important, with an even balance of correction and praise. It’s important to follow good behavior with praise. You don’t want the dog to lose its spirit.”’ Holowolenko uses four basic steps in correction.
