REPORT ‘NOT VERY ENCOURAGING’ PLANS OF North Shore Pegasus Soccer Club to build a 2000 seat soccer stadium at Norseman Park have been referred by North Van- couver City council to a meeting of its Parks and Recreation Committee. No date has been set for the meeting. But City staff indicated in a report to council that they are not very happy with the plans for the stadium, citing parking problems, loss of valuable open space in the City core, the loss of a field for field hockey and touch football, the conflict with the pro- posal by the Optimist Club to build a 7000 seat stadium on the North Shore. and the possibility the Pegasus pro- ject might fail, leaving City taxpayers to pay the bills. Though Mayor Jack Loucks said he agreed with the staff report, some coun- cil members were not pleas- ed with the way = staff presented their arguments. Alderman Gary Payne said the wording of the report was “not very en- couraging” to Pegasus or other groups that might want to take a similar initiative. Alderman Ralph _ Hall agreed, commending the “great community | spirit” shown by Pegasus. He said it was a refreshing change to see a group coming up with such a proposal and offering to pul up their own time and money to make the proposal work. “Most sports clubs come to us cap in hand, wanting money for junkets to Europe or the United States,” Hall . City knocks Pegasus plans said. Payne suggested the Parks Committee meet in July and devote an entire evening to the issue of a new stadium. Everybody concerned, in- cluding other sports groups, should be asked to come to the meeting, he said. Mayor Loucks, though agreeing the stadium should be discussed at a Parks Com- mittee meeting, wondered how many stadiums are located in North Vancouver District and West Van- couver. The City already has stadiums at Mahon Park and Kinsmen Park, he said. According to the report of the Technical Planning Committee (made up of senior City staff members), parking is already scarce around the North Vancouver Recreation Centre, and if the stadium were built, there would be 167 less parking stalls than needed. The planning committee dismissed a suggestion by Pegasus that the stadium could be used by other groups when not needed for soccer. “It was recalled that past conflicts had arisen where the joint use of play- ing fields for Field Hockey, Field Lacrosse, Touch Foot- ball and Soccer had been propsoed.” Another problem was that Norseman Park is tand that belongs to the City and “the Pegasus Soccer Club should appreciate that City parkland 1s not free just because 1t is pubhcly owned, and that they should be CONTINUED ON PAGE BO THE NORTH SHORE’S COMPUTER EARNING CENTRE CHILDREN’S SUMMER CLASSES Have fun learning about computers in our four day Courses beginning July 4 Two hours each morning or afternoon MACHINE LANGUAGE A twetve hour Course for Adults and Teens with knowledge of programming INTRODUCTION TO VISICALC Learo multiple uses of the tle trome Worksheet {oash blow and Beoeak b ven Statements INTRODUCTION TO WORD PROCESSING AU hands on oxpenence PRIVATE LESSONS Call tor details PHONE 926-8658 NORTH SHORE COMP-U-TRAIN LTD. 1860 MARINE DRIVE WEST VANCOUVER, BC v7v 1J6 (One block east of the Public Library) SECTION BUSINESS « AUTO - "REAL ESTATE eee A STUDY IN concentration, Cameron Kwan studies the pitch in North Shore Softball action recently.
