She isa Heritage Day dinner set of our past and their efforts to not only preserve it, but to restore it to its former use as a social gathering place on the North Shore. The Lodge was formerly the hiome of Colonel Si. George Hammersley, who was the first solicitor for the City of Vancouver. It was the first large house on the North Shere. The property at that time contained 19,000 acres and extended up to 8th Street. The family donated the eastern part of Victoria Park to the city in 1910. Colonel Hammersley also started the ferry system between North Vancouver and Vancouver and introduced hop growing in the Fraser Valley, at Agassiz, which was called Hammersley at that time. He was a founder of the first athletic club in Van-— couver, which became the Vancouver Rowing Ctub, and the first president of the Rugby Union. Heritage Canada, a non- governmental body, has succeeded in getting national recognition for this day from Parliament to make everyone aware of their natural and built-in heritage.
