LEARN TO sew with the new sucdes ato ao three-hour seminar and fashion show to be held Jan. 29 at the Couch House Ina, Hazel Boyd. president of Tex-Mar Seminars and Publica- tions, will present the seminar, viving expert: sewing tips on how to personalize your own designs with interesting Jeather trims and how to create sepurates or com- plete ensembles with suedes and leathers “This seminar will teach veople to achieve the high fashion look without the high price,"" says Boyd. . She estimates a vest could be made for $50 in one of the suedes while an Ultraleather skirt could be made for approximately $150. Boyd will discuss how to sew with the new suede fabrics — Ultrasuede, Facile, Caress, and Lamous — as well as Ultraleather. The casy care, non-creasing aspects of these fabrics makes them ideal for travelling, she says. With a soft, supple hand, Ultraleather has a luxurious ap- pearance and is fully washable like the suedes, Boyd adds. The seminar is designed to assist the home sewer in pattern selec- tion, styling, cutting fabric to best advantage, easy construction methods, creative touches and af- fordable accessories. *‘No home sewer should be afraid to sew the new super suedes and leathers,’’ says Boyd, adding that many home sewers are ap- prehensive about cutting into these unusual fabrics. “But after the women leave the presentation, our comment sheets are usually filled with enthusiastic remarks and everyone seems ready to take the plunge,”’ reports Boyd. Based in North Vancouver, Boyd is a former Canadian direc- tor of Knit and Stretch Sewing, and boasts extensive experience in pattern and -dress design. She studied three years under Euro- pean instruction in pattern draf- ting and haute couture. Her most Tecent training took her to New York where she completed the Vogue professional dress and pant fitting programs. As well, Boyd has written two sewing books, Couture Action Knits and the revised edition of Silks and Satins. She currently tours across Canada giving sewing seminars. According to Boyd, the look for leather fabrics in the 90s is bright colors, similar to those of real leathers, as contrasted with the 70s when pastel colors such as dusty pink and blue were popular. During the seminar, a complete fashion show is modelled so that “as I’m teaching about a certain aspect of sewing, everyone can see what it looks like when it’s in a finished garment.”” Boyd also uses slide presenta- tions so participants can see at first hand what she is doing. The fee for the seminar and fashion show is $25 (plus GST) which includes a copy of an Ultrasuede publication with a value up to $8.95.
