So you heave a sigh of relief, pour yourself a cup of coffee from the coffee-maker on the table, and — reach for a doughnut? Look for the pastry cart? Send out for a Danish? It’s been a trying after- noon at home. The kids have been using the couch as a launching pad; the dog thinks your new bedroom carpet is a flower garden; and the phone hasn't stopped ringing. Finally, everyone's outdoors and the phone is off the hook. You gratefully pour yourself a steaming mug of coffee, and — peek into the fridge? Raid the pantry? Rummage through the cookie jar? If you have the “cofiee and ....” habit, you ow how easy it is to come to rely on that little snack to get you through the day. It can even reach the point where muiss- ing that break leaves you feeling deprived, restless, irritable. But, if you're trying to lose weight, that mid- morning or afternoon coffee break can have a devastating effect on your. efforts. Perhaps it’s time to reassess your snacking habits and make some adjustments. In the first place, do you really need all that caffeine? Caffeine (found in coffee, tea, chocolate and cola drinks) can indeed give youa temporary “lift,” but too much can also make you nervous, edgy — and prone to food binges to help you “calm” your nerves! You might be better off to hmit yourself to a maximum of a cup or two of caffeinated beverage a day and reach for fruit or vegetable juice or skim milk the rest of the time. Secondly, who said a “break” had to involve eat- ing and drinking at all? Might it not be just as refreshing to take a brief, brisk walk around the block, or down a flight of stairs to another office? What about just gazing out a window for a few minutes or reading a few pages of a good book? Of, if you can find the priva- cy, try a few stretching exercises to get the “kinks” out of tired muscles. If a change of scene and a stretch are what you really need, don't try to substtute the artificial stimulant of coffee instead. Union of love, but...
