It took me three visits: to
Rome before I found the
Vatican Museum, perhaps
because I wasn’t looking for
it. For any visitor to Rome, it
should be tops on the “must
see” list.

The Vatican itself could
take“you a year to visit but
since most of us don’t have
that kind of time, allow at
least the better part of a day.
If you begin with St. Peter’s
in the morning (special
emphasis on the Sistine
Chapel, the catacombs .and
Michaelangelo’s “Pieta’’)
plan iunch in the basement
cafeteria of the Vatican
Museum and spend the rest
of the day in the Museum.

It’s no trick to find the

Vatican. Since most tourists *

of the main railway station, ©

try catching a bus from the

courtyard in front. Cabs are -

expensive and if you decidé

advance. I always ask the —

and begin giving directions.

most of the way up into the
dome. A lift will take you
part way but from there
you’re on your own. I have
no idea what the view is like
from way up there — and I
have no intention of finding
out.

Michaelangelo’s famous
“Pieta” is magnificent. For
those who have never seen a
picture of it, it is a gigantic
marble carving of Mary
holding the body of the
crucified Jesus. Several
years ago a maniac riddled
the masterpiece with bullets

.* but it has been resotred —

bulletproof glass.

from St. Peters. Walk out
the front entrance, through
St. Peters’ square and turn
left on Via de Porta
Angelica. Turn left again at
the next corner, Viale
Vaticano, and the entrance
is about half way down the
block. This sidewalk is
cluttered with street carts
selling all sorts of stuff and

may the buyer beware.
Prices are sky high.
The cafeteria in the

basement of the Museum is

Most visitors to the
museum do what the signs
say: Follow the arrows UP.
And UP. By the time you
reach the top, probably
several hours later, your feet
will be killing you.

My best advice is to find
the elevator and go right to
the top. Work your way
DOWN, following the
arrows in reverse. Believe
me, it makes your day a lot
more pleasant.

your visit for the spring or ~

fall.
