Sunday Feature Home

This week our Feature
Home is one of the most
unusual that we have run.

ark, the house is situated
in a forest on the side of a
hill by a stream in the West
Bay area of West Van-
couver. Designed by ar-
chitect- Henry Yorke Mann,
the interior is like a cross.
You enter into the centre of
the house with rooms
“extended” rom the centre.

The most striking feature
of this home is that the walls
are not vertical. The outside
walls slant to reflect the
surrounding hill and _ the
inside walls slant outward to
reflect the shape of the
human figure, small at the
foot and broad at the
shoulder.

The Clarks first noticed
the one-third acre wedge-
shaped lot when visiting
friends nearby. It was ex-
tremely difficult to build on
since the earth was glacial
till. Nevertheless, with the
help of one shipwright, two
cabinetmakers, and about 30
American draft dodgers the

house was erected no easy

task since some of the
Douglas Fir beams are

8"x28". Despite-the massive

beams, the home feels open
and cozy. There was no need
for insulation as the walls are
self-insulating, being several
inches of solid wood.

There is plenty of light as
the entire house _ is
surrounded by windows,
unique in themselves
because the lower portion of
the glass is angled so you can
look down into the forest,

not just straight out. There

are twelye skylights as well
with built-in lights for night
time. With the house totally
made of wood, there is
bound to be. a_ certain
amount of flexing, which of
course would be disastrous

to all that glass. The problem

was Cleverly solved by using
a special flexible glue
developed in the spacé
program to mate the win-
dows together.

There are no walls on the
living area (upper floor) and
a sense of intimacy is

achieved by having. the ©

rooms at slightly different
levels such as the living room
which has no _ furniture
except a small coffee table.
Instead there is a wrap-
around built-in chesterfield,
which is great for a con-
versation area as well as
small buffets.

There are so many
unusual and beautiful
features in this home, it is
unfortunate we do not have
more space, as one could
probably write a book on
this home.
