MAILBOX North Vancouver resident urges others to ‘go green’ Dear Editor: In the Nov. 17 civic elections, North Vancouver City voters will be asked to vote on a parks referen- dum concerning several green space areas. The voters will be asked to decide ‘‘yes’* or *'no’’ to dedicate these areas as official park areas. forever safe from non-park use. The involved areas are: 1. Block 220A, located south of East 23rd Street between Ridgeway and Grand Boulevard. This biock was formerly part of Greenwood Park but was removed by an order-in-council, with no public in- put, in June, 1975 for a proposed seven lot luxury housing development. It is still zoned park because attempts to rezone it have met with vigorous opposi- tion from the public. This Jand ‘‘grab’’ for devel- opment can be forever thwarted by official park dedication. 2. The entire Loutet Park area is zoned ‘‘park’’ on city zoning maps but has never been officially dedicated to give it lasting protection to maintain it as a park. 3. The green space located directly west of Loutet Park, between Rufus Avenue and William, south of the Upper Levels Highway, is currently a ‘‘special study area.”? This is a natural extension of Loutet Park, very heavily treed, that counteracts the pollu- tion, noise and unhealthy effects of the highway. The City of North Vancouver has experienced a tremendous growth in the past 10 years, resulting in heavy traffic on city streets and much denser devel- opment that has caused the removal of many trees and loss of open space. If we want to preserve our quality of life in this smail city, we must save whatever open space we have \eft and we must certainly ensure that our pres- ent parklands are forever protected from any future develuper-dominated council. Certainly saving these lands will cost taxpayers ff money in that the city will lose potential tand sale and tax revenue. But think what it would cost the taxpayers in the future to buy developed fand for park purposes, if they ever would! Except for the playing fields in Loutet Park, all these lands are well treed and offer a wilderness-type escape from city-induced stresses while also acting as giant lungs to cleanse the air we breathe of noxious substances. The in-process North Vancouver Parks and Recre- ation Study has found that the chief demand from the public is for unstructured types of space with trails and pathways for walking, jogging and relax- ing. I urge all city voters to come out on Nov. 17, ‘Go Green," and vote ‘‘yes’’ to dedicate these parklands. They will forever serve as a magnificent testimonial to this city's vision for the future. Viire Daniels North Vancouver . Transit users should feei proud Dear Editor: 1 would simply like to express some appreciation and thanks to the forward-thinking citizens of the Lower Mainland who are able to (and do) utilize public transit, bicycles, motorcycles, carpools, and their own two feet to com- mute to work each day. Not only are these people mak- ing the daily commute that much less stressful for others, they are also reducing the need for further road expansion (which in turn saves us all money), and most im- portantly are the ‘pioneers’ of the fight to clean up something which we all share and depend on Beware of GST smoke screen Dear Editor: I fail to understand why there is any debate required on the subject of whether the GST wil! cause prices to rise or fall. The whole purpose of the tax is to raise more money for the government. Ostensibly, the purpose is to pay down the national debt. Since the tax is intended to take Hypnotherapy, a combination of HYPNOSIS and COUNSELLING, is a natural and comfortable way of feeling better while achieving your goals. Debate is just a smoke screen. One wonders at the hallucinogenic properties of the smoke. Psul Thomas North Vancouver Daniel J. Rutley, C.C.H.
