Programmes Since 1969 the North Vancouver Outdoor School (NVOS) has been providing world-class environ- mental and cultural education programmes. Whether exploring the inner workings of a salmon hatchery or experiencing first hand the traditions of the Coast Salish people as taught by Squamish elders in a replica Bighouse, students attending the NVOS have a unique hands - on learning experience. These experiences would not be possible without the hard work of NVOS staff, visiting teachers and the hundreds of counsellors that volunteer at the school. The extra work put in by these groups is the basis for a very strong working partnership, but is not the only example of important partnerships at the NVOS. Through a partnership with =the Nature Conservancy of Canada the NVOS land was protected forever by legal covenant as a salmon, eagle and environmental education preserve. At the same time partnerships with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, BC Hydro and Forest Renewal BC increased both the salmon and eagle habirats at the INUKSUK NVOS_ while providing unique educational opportunities — for —_ the school’s many visitors. The Pacific Foundation — for Understanding Nature is also involved with the NVOS and in a partnership with the North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped and the St. Christopher’s Schovi Society has secured the funding to build a new Special Needs residence at the NVOS. On the student side of things, a long standing partnership with the NVOS Alumni Society assures that no student is denied access to, the NVOS for financial reasons through the Society’s successful Outdoor School for Kids Bursary Fund. The Alumni Society also recognizes the many superb volunteers that work as counsellors at the NVOS with their Scholarship Fund for graduating high school students. Given the untold thousands of students and private guests that have experienced the NVOS from all over the world and the incredible support of all their partners, the Outdoor School is looking forward to continuing as an_ integral part of the outstanding edu- cational opportunities avail- able through the North Vancouver School District #44.
