She was korn in the North Vancouver General Hospital in 1927. This building on 13th Street was the first hospital on the North Shore, and present- ly houses the rehabilitation and psychiatry services at Lions Gate Hospital. Tn 1912, her grandfather came to West Vancouver and began farming on Clyde Avenue, just east of what is now 13th Street. When Dally’s father, Harry Nesbitt, married, he built a house next duor to the farm, where she lives today. He sup- ported his wife and four daughters by delivering, milk for Fulliger’s Dairy, and later driving the West Van Blue buses. Dolly and her three sisters attended Hollyburn School and West Van Hi: 1s and also helped out with their grandfa- ther’s farm, including taking his cows across Marine Drive to graze on the ands that are now the pitch-and-putt golf course. In 1947, Dolly met and married Doug Cartwright, a member of the permanent Armed Forces who was born and brought up in North Vancouver. They had a family of four sons, who in time, gave them seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. As well as raising her family and helping out with the fami- ly farm next door, Dolly was busy with volunteer work in the community. The family lived in Winfield for three years, where she was active with the Red Cross, Brownies, Cubs and Scouts and her church women’s auxil- iary. She and her husband became involved with the Royal Canadian Legion and when they moved back to West Vancouver, both of them took on active leadership roles with West Vancouver Branch 60. For 30 years, Dolly worked with the Ladies’ Auxiliary, as president for eight years, orga- nizing and carrying out a mul- titude of social events and giv- ing support to many veterans and therr famil lies. To quate from a statement nominating her for one of the many awards she has received from the Legion: “ She is hard-working, completely ded- icated, and extremely capable. .
