PRING fashions are clean and simple. It’s only natural that the season’s prettiest hair styles follow the same clean line. “The concept is the same, with neat, simple cuts, close to the head and personalized fringes being cither long or short, full, tapered or testurized,” says hair stylist and salon owner Lena $ of West Vancouver. In fashion, the cur of the garment may be simple but the fabrication is luxurious -— materials thar shimmer and shine, and are embellished with delicate embroidery, lace and sequins. Hair follows suit with simple cuts enhanced with beauti- ful color. “Color prevails with highlights, lowlights, tong-on- tone shades, platinums and pale blonds,” says Lena J. Color was big last year but is even bolder this season, says Joseph Maggi, artistic director at Structure Hair Design in Edgemont Village. Dark hair is popular again, says the stvlist, with brunettes enriching their natural hair rone with mahogany and copper. His starement for spring is a mid- ‘length bob that moves easily from sleek and straight to tightly curled or kinked. Stylists at Raymond S#ens in Park Roval are shaping looks that reflect the "70s am? °8Os with a hint of the ‘40s. Textured cuts with swe lines and threads of color throughout set off spring's urban fashions. Short cuts are cropped elose to the nape and texturized ar the crown. Chin-sweeping bobs are sliced with clean, strong lines. Sleek bobs are “color scratched,” a freehand technique that stylists use to break up solid color. Bleach is loosely combed through semi-permanent color to add highlights and dimension to hair. At Hair Mode on Marine Drive in North Vancouver, Karl Robathan is clipping hair into mid-length bobs with shattered ends. The style is not the structured, blunt cut that Vidal Sassoon Pioneered in the "60s, “We're breaking the hair up so it’s not big and bulky,” says Robathan. “ft has a chunky feel, still very soft and flowing. Everything still moves.” While runway models sport a short-cropped fringe, Robathan gives his customers a more street-fricndly look. The tringe is left long, with the back cut shorter, tapering ro longer front and sides. As for color, chunky skunk stripes are all bur gone now, says Robathan, In a technique he calls “shadow boxing” panels of calor are placed beneath and around the part line to add depth and definition. An individual look can be created by the juxtaposition of highlight- ing colors — golden brown with golden blond are placed side by side to create texture and emphasize movement, says Robathan.
