I hate to appear chary

veracity; she may be posi-
tively bursting with
integrity. But she is hired
help and will do what her
political master’s decree.

Looking at this list of

Andrew Petter, Corky
Evans, Gordon Wilson,
Clueless Campbell and the
raft of unelected power
brokers a la Ken Georgetti
et. al docs not inspire onc
that any of them can spell
integrity, let alone know
what it means.

This latest gag order
slipped into tribunal regu-
lations” should. scare the
B.C. voter. The’ govern-
ment will not lose sleep
over a couple of dozen
children: who disappear in

Dear Editor:

Although I agree with a few of Doug Collins”
points in his article “Hong Kong Owes Britain
Much” (eg. the ancient Chinese “middle kingdom”
supremacy and superiority over other foreigners), 1
think he gave a grossly simplified picture which was
far from a true reflection, of history.

Yes, Hong Kong was spared from communism
and was allowed to develop without its authoritarian
rule. However, to give an analogy, it does not neces-
sarily follow that taking a child away from an abusive
home sill naturally allow him to bloom — (c.g.) if
the ight environment is not provided and the child
does not work hard. Billionaires do not simply thrive
because they grew up in Hong Kong which hap-

pened to be free of communist rule and governed by
Britain.

Very often, they have to work hard, too.

On another issue, democracy and law can be evo
separate things: giving British law is not equivalent
to executing it genuinely.

Think of the law whereby the Hong Kong people
have to apply and be approved before they can hold
a demonstration. Is that democracy or fear of free-
dom of expression?

Think of how Hong Kong has never had a demo-
cratically elected government.

When you think deeper, which this article fails to
do, you wonder if one of the reasons why Hong
Kong did not care much about democracy is that it

Claims case small potatoes

Dear Editor:
I read with interest the story “Claims Court

Ordeal” by Ian Noble in the July 30 News.

The events leading up to the complainant’s
problem were in-my opinion, preventable.

We must all abide by the rules as they have
been created for everyone, and if we disagree
with the process involved then we are entitled
to our day in court where we can provide our
arguments.

That is how I understand the system works.
If you ignore the orders of the court, be it a
time limit to respond or a demand to pay a fine
or whatever, then you must be prepared to
incur further expenses or jail time.

The claim that the system is unjust or dis-

criminatory is just another excuse for a lack of
action.
Not paying because he didn’t think he
should have to is not a very convincing argu-
ment.
I feel that the story did not belong on page
3 because it was not newsworthy nor do I
believe that it reported a valid complaint.
