Van man on the road again GLEN WOTTEN is finally on the road. By Anna Marie D'Angelo News Reporter After more than one year of try- ing to get a medically endorsed scooter, Wotten got his wish ful- filled last month. “I do like it. I'm just trying it out and getting used to it,” said Wotten. The 47-year-old North Vancouver man with mental chal- lenges has a degenerating bone dis- ease which makes walking diffi- cult. The Social Services Ministry denied his request and appeals for a scooter three times last year. A ministry official stated Wotten’s medically essential need to have a scooter was not con- firmed. He could walk and use pub- lic transportation. Wotten relied heavily on a cane and estimated that he could walk less than two blocks. He has a heart condition and becomes short of" breath tackling steep sidewalks near his home. Wotten’s bank, Hongkong Bank of Canada on Lonsdale Avenue, donated $400 toward the repair of a donated scooter. Local residents donated about $700 in Wotten's name to the North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped (NSAMH). He also received donat- ed scooter accessories. Armed with $1,185 worth of donations, a NSAMH representa- tive approached the ministry one more time. Social Services agreed to kick in the rest of the cost.
