NV burn scenario not unusual

AN ALARM bel! rang for North
Vancouver City i‘‘re Department
Insp. Gavin Soanes recently when
he read a recent News stury about
Ron Gulley, the North Vancouver
mechanic who suffered burns to
his arms while on the job.

Gulley encountered a vapor
trail while attempting to start a
stalled vehicle by puuring gasoline

_into its carburetor. When Gulley
spilled gasoline on his right arm a
spark ignited the gasoline vapor.
He used his left hand to put it out.
Both arms were injured as a result,
putting the self-employed man out
of work.

The story quoted Soanes as
telling Gulley the chances of the

accident happening were two mil-
lio to one. In fact, Soanes said,
such an accident can easily occur.
Because many people attempt to
treat stalls in this manner, Soanes
wants to warn News readers of
“the extreme danger of pouring
gasoline into a carburetor and then
attempting to start the vehicle
without the air cleaner/flame
arrester in place.”

In such a case, Soanes said, a
spark could ignite the gasoline.
Gulley’s second mistake was hold-
ing the open gas can, rather than
taking it away from the area of the
vehicle and closing it when not
actually in use.

“It’s the volatility of the gaso-

line that’s the concern,” said
Soanes. “Gasoline in and of itself
can be hazardous if not handled
with the proper respeci.”

Car fatality

A 21-YEAR-OLD Vancouver mun died on Oct. 2 follow-
ing a single-vehicle accident on Highway 99, eight kilo-
metres (5 mi.) perth of Lions Bay. .

Ken Jong Chiu, a passenger in the car, was trapped
and injured. He died at Lions Gate Hospital.

To press time, Squamish RCMP were trying to lecate
the driver of the car. Police say the driver left the acci-
dent scene and has not come forward since.

Boater fined
A 59-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver boater was fined
$1,500 on Sept. 30 after he pleaded guilty to impaired
operation of a vessel.

Griffin Layne was charged after Ports Canada Police
investigated a report of a sailboat striking a power line
near the Second Narrows Bridge on June 6, 1993.

Layne is aiso prohibited from operating a vessel for
three months.
