Senior Games with fistfuls of medals from the Labour Day weekend competition. By A.P. McCredie Sports Reporter Leading the way for the North Shore contingent in Prince Rupert was the Saltchuckers’ slo-pitch softball squad, who won gold in the “B” division with a 7-2 win over Fort St, John. The Saltchuckers went one for three in round-robin play, includ- ing a 22-17 loss to Fort St. John, who cruised through early play undefeated, It was another story in the final, however, as the Zone 4 Saltchuckers, under the steady pitching of Al Jarvis, knocked off the favored squad from north-east- em B.C. After four innings of play the game was scoreless, but in the top of the fifth, Fort St. John scored a tun. The Saltchuckers went to work in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs en route to an impressive 7-2 gold-medal win. Saltchucker shortstop Adrian Smith put a closing exclamation mark on the victory as he made a diving stab on a line-drive for the final out of the game. With the “B” division victory, the Saltchuckers will move up to the more competitive “A” division at next year’s Senior Games. Players from the North Shore included John Biskop, Bill Howard, Jarvis, Jack Ratzlaff, Adrian Smith, and manager Bob Robinson. Also playing on the Zone 4 team were nine players from Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver.
