& - Wednesday, January 15, 1992 - North Shore News Keep Collins where he will be Dear Editor: The trouble with Doug is that Doug is trouble, and the quickest way to lose freedom ~~ for all of us! The majority of people know and see this happening. We all should know that freedom is precious and that peo- ple cannot do or say exactly what they wish; one must have some control and respect for all of life, not just select colors, races, or creeds. We learn as children that there are certain rules in life, home and in society. | remember as a child, when | first giggled at seeing a ‘*funny nose.’’ My mother, who knew the man had cunver and had reminder Usee his kind every day: there are many bigots, hypocrites and racists and they see nothing wrong with what they say or do. These people are unfortunate not to have been raised like | was. They really do not know right from wrong and have never learn- ed how to respect life in total. They take great pleasure in their twisted minds to carry out their destructive actions, However, I honestly think the best place for Doug is right where he is so we can all see what he is up to, aud also to be a constant reminder for us that these people are out there and that if power is given to them, we could quickly MAILBOX Alternative forestry theories unproven Dear Editor: Paul Hundal of the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC), and Mark Wareing of the Western Canada Wilderness Commitee have attacked my stand on wa- tershed fogging in recent letters to the North Shore News. In both letters, they make the point that my ideas are outdated and no longer rele- vant, watershed management are the only ones acceptable. In any profession based in scieatific research, there are alternative practitioners. In the medical profession, there are those who advocate and that their theories of and practise “holistic medi- cine,’ and the more extreme practitioners in this area have been banned from practising as medical doctors. Forestry science and practice is no dif- ferent in that there are those who advocate an alternative and largely unproven way to manage forests. Forestry as a practice has evolved over hundreds of years and is firmly based in scientific research. Such practices as clearcutting and slash burning, when properly applied, are perfectly legitimate and have their place. The type of management ad- vocated by Hundal and Ware- ing is firmly based in alter- native theories of practising forestry. These theories are unproven and some can only be described as flaky. On the one side of this debate are the scientists who have spent several decades studying the watershed and whose research forms the basis for the recommended changes to watershed management. On the other side are the unproven thecries of the en- vironmentalists who now want us to indulge in a grand ex- periment witia our wider supply and will use juss about any means to reach that end. Many things Doug has written about have enraged me and 1 real- ly feel sorry for him as he mus? come from a background where this was tolerated and even en- couraged. N.
