26 - Sunday, June 2, 1991 — North Shore News SPORTS Carson Graham finishes third in provincial championships LED BY the outstanding play of their scrum, Carson Graham Eagles claimed third place in the 19th annual B.C. high school rugby championships at UBC last weekend. Rated seventh going into the 16-school tourney, the North Shore and Vancouver and District champions, coached by Doug Barker, Ray Bodnaruk, Guilio Decotiis, Rob McKay, Joe Miarklund and Tim Murcdi, opened their four-tearn section with a clear 16-6 victory over Nanaimo’s Jonn Barsby, but then fell 14-13 to second-ranked Oak Bay. Needing a win over Langley — which they got after eight minutes of sudden-death overtime when flanker Matt Shaughnessy blocked a kick and then carried the elusive ball over the line for a try — and help from Barsby who upset Oak Bay, the Eagles advanced to the semi-finals against White Rock’s Semiahmoo as the top teams in their sections. Semiahmoo spoiled what would have been a better St. Michael’s- Carson Graham final when they scored on a penalty kick from 22 metres out after an offside call at the 18-minute mark of overtime to beat the Eagles 10-7. Carson then toppled Centennial of Coquitlam 20-6 for third place while St. Michael’s of Victoria destroyed Semiahmoo 37-3 for the title. Shaughnessy and eighth man Rosanno Decotiis were named to the all-star team while captain and flanker George Knizek, scrum half Ryan Edgar, second row Jeremy Duncan and kicker Jason Catorre, who scored 31 points with his trusty right foot including a penalty ‘o send the Langley game into overtime, were among the many Carson Graham players to play well. West Vancouver Highlanders, under coaches Brian Lynch (who, as B.C. high school rugby com- missioner, was responsible for much of the smooth-running of the championships), Mike Smith, Nick Galbraith and Pat O’Gor- man, fell 24-0 to St. Michael's, 10-8 to Courtenay’s Vanier and 10-6 to Claremont from Victoria in section games. In consolation play, Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey beat the Highlanders 12-6 before West Vancouver defeated Langley 12-4 for 15th place.
