Increased auto theft demanding attention

ACCORDING TO the Canadian
Centre for Justice Statistics, Ca-
nadians are distinguisning
themselves in at least one area of
modern life. In a recent survey of
14 countries Canada ranked top
for vehicle vandalism, third for
theft from motor vehicles and
tenth for stolen cars.

British Columbia has some
equally alarming numbers. In
1990, ICBC handled 40,051 theft
from auto claims, paying out over
$17.7 million. Province-wide
ICBC claims statistics indicate
that theft from auto has increased
as much as 30% since 1985.

of items stolen from vehicles but
almost anything in, or attached
to, the vehicle is vulnerable. The

measures and implement as many
as possible: always lock your
vehicle; mark valuables with your
driver’s licence number; close ali
windows; put loose valuables in
the trunk; secure gas caps and
outside opening hoods with locks;
install smooth docr-locking but-
tons to prevent access using a coat
hanger; make an inventory of
valuables, including tools, and
keep the inventory outside of the
vehicle; park in areas with pedes-
trian traffic; avoid dark, secluded
areas.
