Van mayor says plan to build Cypress Falls watermain ‘remote’ THE $1.5 million project to push a watermain through West Van- couver’s Cypress Falls Park has teached a political dead end. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter West Vancouver Mayor Don Lanskail said recently the likeli- hood of the 18 to 20-inch main running through the 80-acre park is now ‘‘very remote.’” The initial plan called for the main to run through the park underneath existing park trails. But park users raised opposition to the project, saying the pipeline route would threaten a grove of 200-foot tall Douglas fir trees. Following the outcry, the mayor and other municipal officials toured the site and reassessed the project. But the municipality’s engineers say West Vancouver still needs the main and the water it will bring to the far western reaches of the municipality. West Vancouver engineer Doug Wylie said the route through the park would have been the best both financially and technically, but the municipality is now look- ing at other routes above Cypress Falls. The main, when constructed, will connect a water tank in the Cypress Park Estates, which stores water from the municipality's Eagle Lake, with a water tank in the municipality’s Westmount area, which stores water from the Greater Vancouver Regional District’s Capilano reservoir. The connection would give the municipality’s water system more versatility by allowing use of Eagle Lake water in eastern parts of the municipality when the lake is full and, conversely, by allowing greater use of GVRD water in the A Place To Go When You're Pregnant And \ Need Support: | BIRTHRIGHT | C3 937-7313 » Free Prognancy Test « | | 2S tonedsle én Vancouver Ca | For Senior Citizens (North Shore)—Hearing tests will be given at the Beltone Hearing Centres on Tues. to Thurs. from 13:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Anyone whc has trouble hear- ing is welcome to have the test. Wylie said in terms of feeding Eagle Lake water east, the project has no priority beyond saving the district money that it would otherwise pay in GVRD water fees. Annual savings, he said, could range between $50,000 and $100,000. But getting GVRD water to the far west areas of the municipality G1DAY + WEOMLEDAY « VOUEAY FIRST IN ON THE NORTH SHORE } Vancouver. is much more critical. The need for the extra water, he said, is dependent on ‘‘when we get hit by a drought, which we did in 1987.” Wylie added that growth in the municipality’s west is also placing ever greater pressure on Eagle Lake water supplies.
