The more workers a residential group could support meant a greater output of trading goods such as fish, ornaments and tools. Archaeologists are certain that slavery became an accepted prac- tice and an important element in the class system. Building one of these huge winter homes would be a big undertaking requiring ‘‘a very large work force,’’ says Hayden. The homes were dug into the ground and the sloping roofs were supported by four to six vertical beams, cross-hatched with hori- zontal beams. The beams were then covered with bark and, final- ly, a layer of earth. Winters were spent gathering firewood to help keep the cavernous house pits warm. Huddled together for warmth, the inhabitants made ornaments, leatherwork and buckskin clothing and repaired stone and wooden tools while dim firelight flickered against dark walls. “There is a lot of evidence for the existence of trade,’’ says Hayden.
