HELPFUL TIPS Use screws as fasteners THERE WAS a time in the deep and distant past when using a screw was an exercise in muscle power. Today this is not necessarily so. The development of the variable speed reversible drill that is now being marketed at a price that can be afforded by almost every do- it-yourselfer has made it possible to use a large number of screws in a project without the accompany- ing aching muscles and blistered hands. The new cordless drills, although more expensive, have made it possible to use screws even where power is not available. When using one of these exciting new tools there are several things to remember. When starting the screw be sure to have the tip of the driver firmly Seated in the socket, slot or crosshead of the screw. If you don’t there is a strong possibility of damaging the head of the screw so badly you will not even be able to remove it. Secondly, be very careful when the screw head reaches 2 flush position and be ready to take your finger off the trigger. The torque of these drills is so great you could drive the screw right through the board. When working in hardwood, it is always wise to predrill the holes with a countersink that matches the size and shape of the screw you are using. This will prevent split- ting and will save wear and tear on the drill. It is also wise to lubricate the screw before driving into hardwood for the same reasons.
