WV athlete reaches
for badminton gold

BRENT OLYNYK of West Van-
couver High School and the Van-
couver Lawn Tennis and Badmin-
ton Club is aiming for gold in
competition over the next few
days.

The past year this dedicated 16-
year-old athlete carned a number
one ranking in singles and doubles
under-16 badminton in B.C.

Not content with this success,
Olynyk turned the tables at the ju-
venile national championships by
winning the silver medal in boys
singles in his first year of under-16
competition,

Partnered with long-time rival
Darry! Yung of Victoria, he reach-
ed the boys doubles semi-finals.

This season Olynyk's partner
Yung snatched his B.C under-16
litle fiom him, but as if fired up by
this defeat, Olynyk combined with
Yung to take the B.C. under- 19
boys doubles from the former Na-
tional Juvenile Champions,
Dougal Molson and Ulric Worster
of Vancouver,

Already this year Olynyk has
won doubles in the Calgary Junior
Invitational and in representing
B.C. in the Clarkson Cup Western
Canadian Provincial Champion-
ships led B.C. to top position. *
