Chunnel participation promoted for business LOCAL COMPANIES should in- vestigate the business opportunities presented by the $6 billion Channel Tunnel project to link Britain and France, Economic Development Minister Grace McCarthy said. “British Columbia companies are among the ‘best in the world and deserve a piece of what will be the greatest civil engineering endeavor of the century,’’ she said. “Most of the subcontracting and purchasing for the project will begin in mid-1988 and British Col- umbia companies have the pro- ducts, services and expertise re- quired to bid. - ; “The project is scheduled to be completed and in, service, by 1993. The procurement activity involves orders for about $3 billion worth of equipment and services: which will be placed in about five years,”* the minister added. - The Channel Tunnel! project in- volves construction of three undersea tunnels between Cheriton near Folkstone in’ England and Coquolles near Calais in France. The historic fixed link between Europe and England will comprise sengers and motor vehicles and be- tween them a service tunnel 4.8m in diameter. About 150km of tunnels will be built. Major contracts for tunnel- boring machines have already been placed. Opportunities exist for supply of a large variety of goods and ser- vices for construction of terminals, the rail system and communica- tions and electrical systems. “Through B.C. House in Lon- don, and our Agent General, Garde Gardom, Q.C., my ministry is examining ways in which oppor- tunities arising from the project can be employed to benefit British Cciumbia firms,’’ McCarthy said. ‘We are also exploring the pos- sibility of holding a seminar in British Columbia attended by the prime contractors for the project in order to brief interested firms on the opportunities and how to tender for them.’’ Some major procurement categories for which British Col- umbia firms would be qualified to tender include: electrical equip- ment, conveyors, signalling and control equipment, site investiga- Seniors are advised to bring their tax forms.
